Futons: Inexpensive yet stylish adjustable beds
by Marian Hammel, Interior Designer and Feng Shui Expert
Futon beds have been around for a long while, and ever since futons entered the market, they have never ceased to astound people all over the world. So, what is so special about those originally Japanese futons? Futon bed is actually a term that derives from the Japanese futon, which is anything but what we see in futon stores these days.
Originally, it was just a plain futon mattress that would fold up could be stored in a closet and away from plain sign once it had served its purpose which is to serve as a bed. Starting from that very concept, the Western furniture manufacturers came up with a futon frame and we begun seeing all those futon beds.
The truth is that much like any other innovation, it was later reinvented, and what started as a simple mattress that would conveniently fold to be tucked away, turned into futon bunk beds to accommodate more people or a futon chair that serves as an additional bed.
As soon as futons became mainstream, the big retailers quickly joined in the trend and we started seeing an Ikea futon in every students' bedroom. It makes sense, doesn't it? Everybody needs a sofa and a bed to lay upon, so instead of spending for both, you can just buy one piece of furniture that will cater to both of those needs.
Cheap Futons For Sale
Nowadays, cheap futons for sale are a sought after commodity, since everybody is looking for discounts and deals on anything. And while you may be confused when looking through all those discount futons for sale, the fact remains that no matter how stylish or elegant they all may look, they are still a necessity.
In general, when you think of cheap or discount you immediately relate it with lower quality, however, that is not really true in this case (and others for that matter). In fact, while you may find a cheap futon that was just made poorly, you will also find a few cheap futons that have been discounted by the stores in order to reduce their inventory. You should look for tag lines such as furniture liquidation or moving sale, and learn to distinguish between those and others.
For example, while cheap furniture stores may sell low quality beds, one that advertises discount futons will most likely offer high quality at a discount. There are even futon stores that buy the remainder stock from high end stores in bulk and offer them to customers for less than half the actual retail prices. I have personally found cheap futon sets for (frame, mattress and cover) for $250 or less and they were certainly not lacking in quality. So, if you are looking for a futon bed and you have a low budget, then don't be put off.
Another option is to consider used futons. In general, all futon beds have a life span, so you will be taking a chance when you buy a second hand bed, but you will certainly save a bundle. If you choose to go down that path, then always try to look for beds that are only slightly used.
Avoid buying one that has been used heavily, unless if you plan to replace the futon mattress that comes with it. While the cover will most likely reflect whether it has been overly used or not, futon mattresses may have sprained springs on the inside and look brand new on the outside.
Futon Bunk Beds
What comes to mind when you think of futon bunk beds? For me, it's always a children's room, or maybe two roommates living in a studio apartment. However, since the bottom bed can turn into a nice sofa when not being used, one could really place a futon bunk bed wherever, no matter their living situation.
The only difference compared to traditional futon beds is that here, your choices will most likely be limited to brighter colors and a few children themed prints. For some reason, futon bunk beds, and bunks in general, have been connected to children and college students and most manufacturers abide to that correlation.
In other words, chances are that you will not find a nice already made leather futon bunk bed, however, that does not mean that you cannot buy a frame and make it your own. The basic idea is the same, since once you have the frame, you still need a futon mattress and a cover. So, if you prefer something more luxurious or mature, then feel free to experiment with different combinations.
If I had to make a choice, then futon mattresses would be the most important component of a full set. While you may have a great looking sofa with a nice frame and cover, if your futon mattress is not up to par, then you will not be able to get a good night's sleep on it. And a futon bed that can just be used as a sofa is like a cabinet without drawers.
So, if you decide to look for futon sets, then you should definitely inquire about the futon mattresses before you make your purchase. And if you are buying each piece of your set separately, then you should first consider discount futon mattress sizes and once you settle on a size, then try to find an appropriate cover and frame.
You should expect to spend about about the same money for a good mattress as you would for your frame and cover. Yes, they tend to be expensive, but again, it's not one of the things that you want to compromise on. I am not saying that you should go over budget, and you should still try to look for discounts, but I always put comfort first. The bottom line is that modern frames or covers are useless without good futon mattresses!
Futon frames are the one piece of your set that keeps everything together, and as such, you should put a lot of thought before deciding on one. First, you want to consider how you plan to use your futon frame. If it's going to serve as your primary bed, then above all you want it to be durable.
On the other hand, if you plan to use it in your living room as a sofa, then you can afford to compromise on durability and settle with style and elegance. In any case, you want to avoid plastic, and opt for wood or metal futon frames. Most modern futon frames will be durable and sturdy, since a better design also shows attention to detail.
After you decide on a material, you need to consider all the futon frame sizes. As you would expect, you can choose between full, twin, king, and the most popular queen frames. Try to stick to your chosen size, no matter the price, since you have to remember that your chosen frame will determine the size of your mattress and cover, and their respective prices.
You don't want to buy a queen futon frame simply because it's on sale if you just need a twin, because the other components may not be.
If you lack the space for a lot of furniture, but you enjoy having the occasional friend stay over then you may find futon chairs very useful. They only take up as much space as lounge chairs, yet they open up into comfortable twin beds.
Again, you have a wide range of options in regards to the futon mattresses or the frame of your chosen futon chair and the price will reflect the choices you make. You can expect to see all sorts of colors and prints for the covers and several designs that will satisfy both contemporary and classic tastes.
With futon loungers, as they are also called, you will be able to enjoy the benefits of a chair and a bed at the same time simply by pulling a lever or pushing a button. Yes, there are even automatic futon chairs that will transform with the click of a button even through a remote control.
Now, while I would not say that they are the most durable furniture out there nor would I say that these are cheap sofa chairs, I cannot deny that I took great pleasure in showcasing my new remote controlled leather futon chair to all my friends and family.
Futon covers have played a vital role in shaping the look of futons. While at first there were only futon mattress covers that wouldn't come out and could not be changed, once again the idea was reinvented, and nowadays, there is a series of futon covers ranging from different colors to prints and various textures. And that goes both for futon beds and futon chairs.
You also have a choice in regards to the material whether you prefer a more high end leather futon cover or fabric and microfiber futon covers as a cheaper, yet still stylish, alternative. The great thing about them is that you can simply get a removable cover that you can wash or even replace if needed. Think of it like this.
A good leather sofa will cost upwards of $1,000, while futon sets which would include a futon mattress, frame, and either one or even two leather futon covers will most likely cost about half of that price tag. Furthermore, with the later, while you would be able to keep it in the form of a sofa, you also have the option of flattening it out and make a bed out of it.
